Sustainability Assessment of Buildings – Passive Solar Protection

Energy conservation through building energy efficiency has gained prominence all around the world. The four key components for energy efficiency in a building are:

  1. First and foremost, the virtually zero energy passive building design before actual construction
  2. Secondly, the use of low energy building materials during construction
  3. Thirdly the use of energy-efficient equipment for low operating energy requirements
  4. Finally, the integration of renewable energy technology for varied purposes

The first part is concerned with the design of a solar passive building technology prior to construction, which has been adopted worldwide not only for passive heating and cooling but also for daylighting. The second step is to develop buildings with low embodiedenergy building materials. The third factor is operational or functional energy conservation through energy-efficient equipment in the building. Finally, the structure must incorporate integrated renewable systems for hot water heating, solar photovoltaic electricity, and other purposes.

Aludecor aluminium composite panels offer a wide range of options for creating passive solar protection systems, one of the essential features of contemporary sustainable architectural trends. Energy is reflected and dispersed outside the living space when sunlight is properly controlled, lowering energy consumption.

A variety of passive sun protection and natural light systems are listed below.

Ventilated Facade

Aludecor aluminium composite panels can be installed and separated by a layer of thermal insulation with the help of a supporting framework of the ventilated facade. The internal air warms up due to this separation distance and sunlight; a flow is created between the panel and the facade.

Ventilated facade system provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation and adequate weather protection. The significant benefit of ventilated facades is energy savings, which are made possible by the chamber between the outer wall of the building and the ACP sheets or composite panels, which reduces thermal transmittance and saves energy.

Slat System

Whether vertical or horizontal, exterior slat systems are very effective as solar radiation barriers when properly installed and operated. Because these systems are often installed vertically, they are best suited to orientations where solar radiation strikes at a lower angle, such as east and west. Horizontal solar protection devices are ineffective in this instance because the sun is low and hits the facade and windows. While they block direct solar radiation, their key advantage is that they allow indirect sunlight to pass through, allowing for proper interior illumination.

These systems must be used on the exterior as once the radiation goes through glass, they will help filter light and prevent the internal area from heating up. Slats do not have to be used simply in front of glass openings; they may also be employed as a second skin to cover the entire building front, providing shade and minimising overheating. The mechanical properties of Aludecor composite sheets make them an excellent choice for slat systems, allowing a wide selection of shades and textures to be coordinated with the rest of the building’s exterior.

Cantilevers

Cantilevers are permanent, horizontal solar protection systems that produce shadows on a building’s facade and openings during summer while allowing solar radiation to pass through in the winter. Cantilevers often extend one metre from the building’s face; however, their size should ideally be determined by the building’s orientation. They are a particularly effective way to keep buildings from overheating in the summer since they reduce theinfluence of solar radiation by up to 40%. This technique is a fantastic fit for single-family houses, where we have more flexibility in making exterior improvements.

Cantilevers are less effective in portions of the structure where the sun hits at a lower angle, such as the west and east, and are better suited for south-facing locations since they are permanent and horizontal features. The use of Aludecor composite panels in these systems offers several benefits, including simplicity of installation, decreased substructure and material weight, and an exclusive collection of shades, textures, and more.

Lattices

Perforation offers a wide choice of beautiful alternatives for filtering sunlight on facades, among the numerous transformation possibilities, perforation allows for the use of a wide range of shapes and sizes, as well as regular and non-regular patterns, making it an excellent choice for modifying buildings while also significantlyenhancing their energy efficiency.

Solar passive techniques are used in building design to reduce the strain on traditional systems such as heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting. Passive techniques use natural energy sources and sinks to promote thermal and visual comfort. In a composite environment, for example, solar radiation, outdoor air, moist surfaces, vegetation, and so on, an architect’s goal would be to design a building such that solar gains are maximised in the winter and reduced in the summer when the ventilation is maximised.

Aludecor ACP sheets or composite panels offer the perforation possibilities using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology.
