Universal Quartz: Designing an Industrial Landmark That Stands Apart

Most industrial buildings are born out of necessity. They are designed to function efficiently, house machinery, and optimise operations. Aesthetics, if considered at all, usually come much later.

Universal Quartz decided to think differently.

When the brief was shared with Ar. Ricky Mathur, it wasn’t layered with complicated demands. It was direct and honest, the building had to be unique. Not just marginally better than its neighbours, but something that hadn’t been attempted in the area or even within the industry.

“They wanted something out of the ordinary,” recalls Ricky. “It had to stand on its own and withstand the test of time.”

That clarity shaped every design decision that followed. What eventually took form is not just a manufacturing plant, but a thoughtfully designed campus, one that balances performance with personality, and industrial strength with architectural identity.

From Brief to Built Form

Universal Quartz is not a small structure tucked into a corner, it is a sprawling industrial complex with a façade that stretches long and wide. And with that scale came a real concern: how do you design something so large without it feeling flat or repetitive?

The answer didn’t come overnight. The design evolved through several discussions and iterations, with the client closely involved in the process. At one point, the team began looking more closely at the brand’s logo. It carried subtle curves: nothing loud, but enough to spark an idea. Those gentle curves eventually found their way into the architecture, shaping the sweeping lines and defined cornices that now frame the façade.

“When someone passes by such a long façade, it has to create interest,” Ricky explains.

The curves introduce movement to the elevation, ensuring that the building evolves visually as one travel along its length.

The Louvered Entrance: Function with Intrigue

The entrance features a distinctive louver-like installation that immediately sets the tone.

This element performs multiple functions:

  • Provides ventilation
  • Enhances aesthetics
  • Creates curiosity for first-time visitors

“It gives an intrigue value,” Ricky notes. “A visitor doesn’t know what lies ahead. The louvre builds that anticipation.”

Instead of a purely functional checkpoint, the entrance becomes a thoughtful architectural pause.

Why ACP Was the Right Choice

Once the design language was taking shape, the next big decision was material. For a project of this scale, it wasn’t just about how the building would look on day one, it was about how it would age over the years.

After weighing different options, the team decided on ACP from Aludecor. The choice was driven by practicality as much as aesthetics. Longevity mattered. So did colour consistency and resistance to fading under harsh weather conditions.

“The reasons were more than one,” Ricky says. “Longevity, colour stability, anti-fade properties — and the ability to withstand time.”

ACP also gave the team the flexibility they needed to execute the curves and detailed cornices without losing precision. To balance the strong, solid character of the panels, glass was introduced in the central portion of the façade. This added a sense of openness and gloss, preventing the structure from feeling too heavy.

Together, the ACP and glass create a façade that feels both robust and refined, exactly what the project demanded.

Breaking the Monotony

To avoid visual repetition across the large façade, timber accents were introduced just below the cornices. It wasn’t a dramatic move, in fact, it was quite restrained, but it made a noticeable difference.

As Ricky mentions, the idea was simply to break the monotony.

That touch of timber adds warmth to what is otherwise a strong metal-and-glass composition. It softens the overall look just enough, bringing a sense of balance without taking away from the building’s industrial character.

Context Matters: A Subtle Local Influence

Even though the overall design feels contemporary, the campus hasn’t been created in isolation from its surroundings. The team was mindful of where the project stands — geographically and culturally.

Local stones and marbles have been used in the flooring and cladding, not just for aesthetic reasons but because they make sense for the climate. Temperatures, wind movement and overall material suitability were carefully considered. Certain openings were also planned to help manage wind pressure, ensuring the building responds naturally to its environment rather than fighting against it.

“There will be a subtle semblance of Rajasthan in the landscape and portico areas,” Ricky shares. “It will be a small message but subtle.”

The idea was to look at the campus as a whole. Every material choice and design decision ties back to performance, context and a sensitivity to the local setting, creating a space that feels rooted, not imposed.

A Warm Welcome

The Universal Quartz campus sits on a corner plot, which naturally meant two points of entry, a more prominent front entrance for visitors and another along the side road that serves as the labour entry.

What’s interesting is that neither was treated as secondary.

Both access points have been designed with the same level of care and attention. The side entrance isn’t just functional; it carries the same sense of order and welcome as the main façade.

“The side entrance also gives the same welcoming feeling,” Ricky says. “Anyone entering the campus should feel a sense of pride.”

In doing so, the design goes beyond creating an impressive frontage. It quietly reinforces a deeper message: architecture can influence how people feel. When a workplace looks considered and dignified from every angle, it builds pride among those who walk through its gates every day.

More Than a Manufacturing Plant

Universal Quartz proves that an industrial building doesn’t have to fade into the background. With the right intent and attention to detail, even a manufacturing facility can carry character and presence.

From the choice of materials to the curves inspired by the brand, and from climate-responsive planning to the welcoming entrances, every decision adds up to something larger than just infrastructure. The campus doesn’t just serve a function, it reflects ambition.

At its core, this is a plant built to perform efficiently. But it is also built to last, to represent the brand with confidence, and to make a quiet statement within its industrial surroundings.

It stands not just as a place of production – but as a place with identity.
