Patterns in Interior Design

Repetition of any graphic or motif on a material creates a pattern. Patterns related to the illustrative perception of design. Among the seven major interior design elements, prints and patterns convey the personal style & preferences of an individual. They can transform any ordinary space into an amazing one.

The intricacies of pattern designs vary from culture to culture; some often become global trends. Patterns can be found in mixed design schemes; however, managing patterns can be difficult too.

Some of the famous patterns are:

Complex Patterns

Shade used ST-27 Rosso Opaco and ST-28 Swiss Snow

Using more than 2 colours with criss-cross & diagonal lines create complex patterns. They keep the eyes busy and can pull in spectators. Complex patterns are most suited for large rooms, as they dominate over other elements.

Stripes/Lines

Shade used Cortina CT-01, Tenor

For rooms with short height or low ceilings, vertical lines create a pattern for an optical illusion. These lines craft elegance for the room and add visual height. Horizontal stripes or lines are preferred for rooms with less width. The lines can be represented in flooring, upholstery and furniture etc. They can help in achieving both formal and informal designs.

Abstract or Geometric Designs

Shades used MT-5002 Cream, MT-5003 Beige

Abstract, overlapping and shaded patterns eliminate the boredom from a living space, and the chances of mismatch in shapes & hues are meager. Geometric patterns are trendy, and they perfectly match furniture of solid or pastel colours. These can be the safest choices for designing a cosy space, like reading areas, dining rooms, office walls etc.

Argyle

Shade used SD-6012 Ivory Sand and SD-6013 Hawaii Sand

It is the pattern of diagonal checks, as seen mostly on sweaters. To develop a balanced design, this classic pattern should be carefully used. The shades of grey are often chosen, as they are safe to combine with white bands. The application can be a monochromatic scheme for guest rooms or lobby. In the case of a small space, bigger checks can be used because small checks appear too busy. Argyle patterns on cushions and rugs are also good alternatives for implementation.

Polka Dot

It is the most popular one. Polka dots are cute and lively; best suited for children stores, playschools and nurseries. This style of patterned carpets, rugs, walls and fabrics can make interesting living spaces.

Chevron

Shades used TR-02 Country Pine, TR-26 Scarlet Walnut

An interior designer can never go wrong in applying chevron to his/her designs. It can have a great appeal in interiors, whether it is a sophisticated bedroom, a café or a boutique. This pattern and its variations spice up space when different materials are used. Keeping in mind that over-application of even a brilliant pattern can spoil a design, a chevron could be applied to highlight only one element.

There is a long list of patterns for interior design which includes Checker, Animal print, Damask, Fleur de Lis, Floral, Gingham, Herringbone, Hexagon, Ikat, Moroccan, Ogee, Paisley, Toile, Tropical and many more.

To ignite visual interest, it is essential to balance design with the suitable placement of patterns. They add dimensions in an interior design. Contrasting colours in pattern craft vibrant designs and close-in-value colours create soft appearances.

One innovative material that can be used for creating patterns is aluminium composite panels. The good thing about this material is the versatility and availability of its vast range & grades. Different shades of colours and textures open doors for imagination and amazement.

Aludecor has various ACP sheets in different colours, textures, and patterns. They have introduced India’s first 3D-Stripped ACPs, the Cortina Series; these can enrich the living spaces with their mid-tones & highlights to craft a brilliant 3D pattern. Another exciting series is Aludecor’s Mirror Series. These ACPs craft brilliant and shiny interiors. One can also create attractive facades with these ACPs. They are also available in FR grade.
