The Evolution of Logos of the World Famous Car Brands

Some famous brands are known by their logos. Logos of famous automobile companies not only speaks about the type of car it is but also about the brand value and the reputation of the Company. Customers owning branded cars take pride in possessing cars with famous logos.

But have we ever wondered what these branded car logos can have inspiring stories behind their brand names and their logos?

Let’s find out some inspiring stories behind the famous brand logos and their whereabouts.

Audi

Before it became Audi AG, a symbol of luxury and technological advancement in the automobile industry, it was an amalgamation of four different companies.

As a company, Audi was founded over a hundred years ago by August Horch in Zwickau, and it started trading as Audi Automobilwerke GmbH. In 1932, Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer merged into one – the Auto Union AG, which led to the unification of their logos as well. Over the years, the logo slowly and steadily became what we know today. It dropped the logos of the four companies, replacing them with the words Auto Union, only to eventually drop everything and only keep the four interlocked rings.

The last change came in 2009, with the company’s 100th anniversary.

Lamborghini

The first logo appeared in 1952, and it consisted of a triangle, inside which the initials of “Ferruccio Lamborghini Cento” was placed.  After the birth of “Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini SpA” in 1963, Paolo Rambaldi was entrusted with the job of redesigning the logo. He introduced the famous bull, as it was the zodiac sign of the founder and also a symbol of aggressiveness. The fighting stance of the bull inside a red shield with black contour was paired with a calligraphic logotype.

In 1972 the logo was restyled and the name Lamborghini, written in capital letters, was incorporated inside the shield. The logo was sometimes displayed with the inscription lying outside the shield with a Univers Black Oblique font. The logo was redesigned in the year 1998 and the bull was brought back and placed inside the black shield. The logo hasn’t been changed after that. However, sometimes only the logo type is used to represent the company.

Chevrolet

The Chevy Bowtie was introduced in 1913 by co-founder William C. Durant on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand. The logo was placed at the front and center of both models. Regardless of the origin, the Chevy Bowtie has become a global icon. Over the years the logo design incorporated several minor changes to make it more contemporary.

The “Chevrolet” wordmark was once present and then it was taken out. About 100 years of evolution has resulted in a logo that meets the needs of the times.

Renault

Initially named as “Société Renault Frères”, the company got its earliest logo from the initials of the three Renault brothers in 1900. It underwent a number of redesigns in 1906, 1919 and 1923. The first “diamond” emblem was launched in 1925 and has since experienced several minor overhauls in 1946 and 1959.

In 1972, famous Hungarian French artist Victor Vasarely modified and modernized the Renault diamond logo. It was made more dynamic and cleaner with the addition of angular lines. The current form of the diamond badge has been in use since 1992. It was however updated in 2004 and 2007, with the additions of a square of yellow and the company name “Renault”, which were intended to give it a more modernistic and dynamic appearance.

Transforming logos and bring into being new designs require materials that allow greater design liberty. Aluminium Composite Panel or ACP sheets are new age materials that give way to such innovative logos. Aludecor India’s leading ACP brand provides signage solutions to many automobile brands across the country.
